"Screams in the dark"

Anne Boleyn was executed at the Tower of London on May 19, 1536, after being convicted of treason, adultery, and incest — charges widely believed to have been fabricated by her political enemies, including her husband, Henry VIII. She was beheaded on Tower Green, and her body was buried in an unmarked grave in St. Peter ad Vincula chapel, located within the Tower.

Anne’s ghost is said to haunt the Tower, particularly around the areas where she was imprisoned and executed. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her ghostly figure, often described as a woman in a flowing white gown, carrying her head under her arm. The apparition is typically seen near the spot where she was executed on Tower Green or in the vicinity of the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula, where her remains were interred.

One of the most famous sightings of Anne’s ghost occurred in the early 19th century when a sentry on duty reported seeing a woman walking near the Tower’s walls, carrying her own head. He was so frightened that he fainted, and when others investigated, no trace of the apparition was found.
